If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly analyzing how to connect with others, navigating the world in your own way, or wondering why certain things feel more overwhelming than they seem to for others—it might be worth exploring whether you could be on the autism spectrum.
Many adults go years without knowing they’re autistic, often because they’ve found ways to cope or “mask” their struggles. But even with those strategies, life can feel exhausting, confusing, or out of sync. Getting evaluated can offer clarity, validation, and a deeper understanding of how your mind works.
The evaluation process includes a review of your experiences growing up, your current routines and relationships, and how you experience things like social situations, communication, and sensory input. A series of psychological assessments are also administered, scored and interpreted. Whether or not the evaluation results in a diagnosis of ASD, learning more about yourself is powerful—and it can open up the path to greater self-acceptance and support.
Because autism is a spectrum, every individual is unique. Some adults might experience many signs, others only a few.
Here are some common signs of ASD in adults:
At Medens Health, we use a variety of tools to thoroughly assess for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in adults. These include well-established objective measures for sensory processing, social responsiveness, and social communication. Obtained information gives us clear understanding of your everyday life.
We also incorporate gold-standard tools like the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI) into our evaluations. The ADOS-2 is a structured observation that allows us to see how someone interacts and communicates in a one-on-one setting, using different modules tailored to the person’s age and language abilities. The ADI is a comprehensive interview that explores the individual’s early development, social behaviors, and communication style over time.
In some cases, we may suggest additional testing for conditions that often occur alongside autism, such as ADHD, anxiety, or learning differences. We also work to rule out other conditions that can resemble autism, like OCD. Our priority is always to provide clear answers, practical guidance, and support that truly fits the individual.
At Medens Health, our goal is to be as thorough and careful as possible before assigning a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Our experienced psychologists are well versed in ASD and apply the ADOS-2 and ADI-R with expertise for a highly reliable diagnosis. We are paneled with most insurance companies and will perform a free insurance assessment to determine your coverage for ASD testing.
If you or your child are diagnosed with ASD or another condition, our caring psychologists can develop treatment plans and guide you towards managing the condition in the way that works best for you.
